MEDICAL SERVICES

Our ophthalmologists specialize in diseases of the retina. The retina sits at the back of your eye and has light-sensitive cells called rods and cones.  Rods and cones then send electrical signals to the brain along the optic nerve. The brain uses these signals to interpret what you are seeing. When the retina can’t function correctly, these electrical signals can’t make it to the optic nerve, leading to vision complications. Untreated, these conditions can lead to permanent vision loss.

The retina doctor is most often called upon when vision can no longer be improved after appropriate glasses have been prescribed and symptoms cannot be explained by glaucoma, cataract, or other conditions. You may also be referred to a retina doctor if there is any abnormality noted in the back of the eye on routine eye examination, or if you need specialized treatment or surgery.

OPHTHALMIC EYE EXAM

An ophthalmic exam is a comprehensive series of tests done by an Ophthalmologist. These tests check both your vision and the health of your eyes. The Ophthalmologist will usually work with an ophthalmic technician to check your vision, eye pressure and perform various diagnostic tests such as OCT imaging. Once completed, the Ophthalmologist will examine the health of your eye and review your results with you.

OCT AND FA IMAGING

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is for performing high-resolution cross-sectional imaging. OCT can function as a type of optical biopsy and is a powerful imaging technology for medical diagnostics. This kind of testing can provide a live view of the retinal tissues and is essential for tracking changes during visits.

A fluorescein angiography (FA) is a medical procedure in which a fluorescent dye is injected into the bloodstream. The dye highlights the blood vessels in the back of the eye so they can be photographed and help your doctor determine how and where you may need treatment.
